SHAVE or DESHED?
Many times an owner will request that their shedding dog is shaved down to lessen or eliminate shedding. Doggie Salon does not recommend shaving of certain breeds. Examples of some of these breeds would be Labradors, Goldens, Collies, Shelties, Beagles, German Shepherds, Pekingese, and Pomeranians, to name a few. These breeds have what is called a ‘determined’ coat. Determined coat length is one that will shed out when the coat reaches a certain length. This then makes way for the new coat to come in. This is a natural and necessary process. Shaving these breeds will affect this process and in time, can cause other health issues.
Here’s some facts about shaving ‘determined’ coat lengths:
The picture below is a great example of a Labrador that has been shaved many times. You can see the bald spots by the tail and center of back. The hair will not grow back in these spots.

If you still wish to get your determined coat breed shaved Doggie Salon will do so. However, we will still deshed your dog after shaving since that is ultimately what is needed. If you are uncertain about shaving your particular breed please contact us.
Regular grooming at home, with the proper tools, and professional grooming throughout the year will greatly reduce the shedding around your home.
